So maybe my problem isn't really with this book or it's author, but rather with the fact that we're still reading it inwhen there's gotta be new stuff out there that would take us beyond designing with nature, to maybe designing for nature, design by nature, nature by designers, who knows, just anything but Design with Nature! Now -- collaboration with scientists, engineers and stakeholders is deeper and more effective; multidisciplinary teams are a norm, not an exception. Map existing valuable places, problem places, and places likely to change anyway. Now, we know that stasis and equilibria are the nature of theoretical ecology.

The case-study sections, when the book is actually doing the work of planning, is when it is at its strongest. Each has found what works, what is appropriate, and what lasts. Non-physiologists, for example, might overlook the agents of homeostasis that lead, largely by themselves, to the marvellous harmony of structure and function we observe in nature. Fraser N. Established politicians sometimes stumble and get lost in clumsy arguments when forced to defend the basic concepts of their politics against a cleverly presented and maybe radically different opinion. But do we think often enough of human nature?

Always a polemicist, McHarg set his thinking in radical opposition to what he argued was the arrogant and destructive heritage of urban-industrial modernity, a style he described as "Dominate and Destroy. And The Nature of Design book we measure the total energy of the universe, which could have been anything, the answer turns out to be the only one consistent with this possibility. If our universe arose spontaneously from nothing at all, one might predict that its total energy should be zero. Ecosystem services cannot be preserved or strengthened by simply focusing on the isolated patches of green amid relentless urban fabric — we must come to understand the entire city as an ecosystem, and must design it to function better in supporting the ecosystem processes that we care about.

Intelligent Design

The Nature of Design book book isn't a design guide, manual, textbook, or demonstration, but is instead a design manifesto. If we value nature and the wildlife its supports, we must integrate cost-effective and sustainable conservation practices into mainstream agricultural production systems worldwide.

Ask "How does Nature do this function? Here, the differences and continuities of humanity and nature must connect people and natural systems so the way we think, act and communicate is once again explicitly connected to the world around us. Now that description might sound somewhat familiar.

I appreciate that the volume isn't wasteful and is more economical this way, but it seems like it takes forever to get through. He developed practical planning and design techniques to make them real, and then he put his theory into action around the world. But what of nature as designer?

The challenge remains to show that, in the end, it is also the most cost effective, if cost includes the future health of the planet, its living beings and beauty.
